In mildly cyclic conditions up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, stainless steel 310 Pipe is exceptionally resistant to oxidation and is a heat resistant alloy. The nickel and high chromium contents of this alloy provide the same corrosion resistance, superior oxidation resistance, and the ability to retain a larger fraction of room temperature strength than common austenitic alloys such as Type 304 because of its nickel and high chromium contents. It has excellent toughness to -450 degrees F temperatures, and it has low magnetic permeability, making it suitable for use at cryogenic temperatures. As a result, SS 310 Pipes are frequently used at cryogenic temperatures.

Stainless steel UNS S31000, S31008, S31009 Seamless Pipe can be made of austenitic chromium, nickel stainless steel with a maximum carbon content of .08 percent with good oxidation resistance and strength at high temperatures. Under constant service and without the presence of sulphur gasses, the material resists oxidation at temperatures up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Furthermore, it can also be applied to intermittent service at temperatures up to 1900 degrees F due to its high coefficient of expansion and its ability to resist rescaling. In heat service, this factor helps to reduce the tendency for the steel to warp as a result of the heat. This alloy is similar to 310, with the exception of the lower carbon content. This is done in order to minimize carbide precipitation during welding.

It is an ideal choice for applications that call for elevated temperatures to use stainless steel 310H pipes because of their carbon content. In sporadic use, 310H SS Pipes have excellent resistance to oxidation, and in continuous use, they have excellent resistance to oxidation at temperatures up to 1150 degrees C (2102 degrees F) in continuous service and 1040 degrees C (1904 degrees F) in sporadic use. In areas where sulfur dioxide gas is present at high temperatures, this type of steel pipe is commonly used; however, it is advised that this steel pipe should not be used continuously at a temperature of 425-860 degrees Celsius (797-1580 degrees Fahrenheit).
