Stainless Steel 317/317L/317H Fittings

There is a difference between the high carbon alloy 317 and the low carbon alloy 317L pipe fittings. It has the ability to be used in applications where maximum corrosion resistance is required and where it is not likely to anneal behind welding, since austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel cannot anneal behind welding. With intermittent repair to 1600°F and continuous service to 1700°F, the material offers good corrosion resistance over a wide temperature range. In comparison to the common chromium-nickel alloys like SS304 and SS316L, SS 317 is an austenitic alloy that contains molybdenum and is more resistant to chemical attacks than those chromium-nickel alloys.

Furthermore, 317 is also capable of providing greater strength levels at higher temperatures, such as higher creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength.

The alloy 317L is austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content that provides better corrosion resistance than the alloys 304L and 316L due to its austenitic nature. In view of the lower percentage of carbon in SS 317L, it is less susceptible to sensitization during welds and other thermal procedures as a result of less carbon content. While alloy 317L may not be magnetic in the annealed environment, it is possible for the magnetic characteristics to return once it is welded.

As opposed to austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel which is prone to carbon corrosion, alloy 317L (UNS S31703) exhibits low carbon corrosion. This combination of high levels of these elements gives the alloy the ability to resist corrosion and chloride pitting better than the conventional grades of 304/304L and 316/316L, due to the high levels of these elements. As opposed to 316L, the alloy offers better resistance to corrosion in highly corrosive environments that contain sulfurous media, chlorides, and other halides.

Because of the low carbon content in Alloy 317L, it is possible to weld it without intergranular corrosion occurring due to the precipitation of chromium carbide inside the weld, which allows it to be used in its as-welded form. It is possible to turn the alloy into the dual expert of Alloy 317 (UNS S31700) with the addition of nitrogen as an increasing agent. There is no magnetic property in the annealed condition of alloy 317L. In spite of the fact that it cannot be hardened by heat up treatment, the material will solidify if it is subjected to cold working conditions. The alloy 317L can be easily welded and processed using standard fabrication practices that are used in most shops.

The higher molybdenum content of SS 317/317L Pipe Fittings assures superior corrosion resistance in mainly media, when compared with other stainless steel grades, thanks to its superior corrosion resistance. The 317L stainless steel is usually uncorroded by environments that do not bother certain stainless steels. Nitric acid, on the other hand, is one of the few powerfully oxidizing acids that do not cause chemical reactions. Molybdenum alloys are generally not as good at making metals in these environments as alloys that do not have molybdenum.
