There is a higher-carbon change in stainless steel 321H as compared to stainless steel 321. As well as stabilizing the 321H, a niobium addition has been added to it in order to prevent the corrosion of the intergranular spaces. This material can also survive at higher temperatures than type 321 as it is rich in carbon, which makes it able to withstand higher temperatures. There is no way to harden 321H through heat treatment, however it displays the same welding and forming characteristics as type 321, except that it cannot be welded or shaped. As a result, it is used in situations where type 321 cannot handle the elevated temperatures, typically above 1000°F. In comparison with 321 and 304 stainless steel sheets together, type 321H demonstrates better resistance to creep than the combined types 321 and 304.

As well as showing resistance to acid corrosion, 321H is also able to withstand a wide range of environmental conditions. The metal works better at lower temperatures, where it can withstand a 10% acid solution that has been diluted to a certain degree, but it is still capable of surviving 50% acid solutions at important temperatures. Despite this, despite its high melting point, the metal shows very little resistance to chlorine and sulfuric solutions at any given temperature. Due to the fact that stainless steels 321 and 321H have similar compositions and properties, it is likely that these steels will become dual certified at some point in the future.

As for general corrosion resistance, alloy 321 exhibits a good quality that is comparable to that of alloy 304. It has been designed for use in the range of chromium carbide rainfall temperatures between 1800°F and 1500°F across the globe.
